What is the purpose of the game "Mother May I"?

I was babysitting some kiddies the other day and they started playing this and I just don't understand the premise...I'm not sure if I should be happy they are playing such an innocent game, or disturbed that they can't remember to say "Mother May, I". Really kids? It's the name of the game!!! GAERRAHAHGH!!!!!
