What is the defference between stout and ale?

Ale is a type of beverage at the level of Beer. You can have Beer, Ale, Mead.... and so on. Stout is a variation of any one of those types. You can have a Stout Beer, Stout Ale... (well, for stouts, that's pretty much it).
